You will never be able to walk to Fort Dawnguard via the road. When you get the message "You cannot go this way" it means you have hit the edge of the map, the border that contains Skyrim (hey, it has to stop somewhere).
Fort Dawnguard was placed outside the border of the playable Skyrim area. The only way in is by the cave, or fast travel.

I was originally confused by the map and thought there was something wrong with my content or I was doing something wrong. Unfortunately I had to look online to find out about the cave to Fort Dawnguard. The cave wasn't the easiest or blatant to find.

The gate goes to another province of Tamriel which is not available for play, it is only there to make the world look consistent, there is nothing but empty low-detail land beyond the gate. It isn't part of Dawnguard, and appears without the DLC.
I believe you can only access Fort Dawnguard via a cave as others mentioned. Fort Dawnguard does not (in terms of engine, not context of the game), I think, exist within Tamriel.
